RoutesAndMethods.org:
an open venue for the communication and exchange of ideas

COLD STORAGE 2:

OVERVIEW:
Out of my studio window is the construction site of a giant cold storage warehouse. It is about 40,000 sq. ft. with 45 ft. high solid concrete walls. I have cultivated a relationship with the head of the project and he has given me permission to use the site during non-construction hours. The building method is fast paced and I need to act quickly to make the best use of it. Since claiming it as a creative site, the goal is to add history, encourage risk taking, and to open the potential for failure. To propose a project, e-mail mp@RoutesAndMethods.org. The site is located at 1168 E. 5th Street, Los Angeles 90013.

COLD STORAGE 1
Saturday, June 17 at 2pm - Monday, June 19 at 5am
Claimed the construction site as a creative space. During the first weekend of access I attached a 325 ft wire from my studio stereo, out the window, over the street, into the building site, to another studio speaker, thus claiming the site. The speaker sat playing at full blast until the workers showed up Monday morning. I decided to begin Cold Storage 2, and began working through the idea for Cold Storage 3. Details
In the mid-1800s velocipede social clubs were formed to teach ladies & gentlemen the mechanics and pleasures of bicycle riding in a safe smooth indoor setting. Around the same time, the first rollerskating rinks were opened so that those for whom two wheels were not enough might enjoy the wonders of eight-wheeled motion in companionship with like-minded souls. In the spirit of whimsy, delight and intrepid enjoyment of harmonious mobility these spaces invoke…
